1. Hire & Fire Your Kids – Customer Feedback

 June 12, 2024

By  Jody Swain

How often do you reach out to your customers to get feedback?

The decision to turn Hire & Fire Your Kids from paper on the fridge into a gamified family app, came to be because of feedback.

We continue reaching out to users and are always so grateful to our Hire & Fire Fam’s for taking the time to provide us with AMAZING thorough feedback on how we can keep getting better.

We will always appreciate, no matter if it’s good, bad or even ugly…

Hi Jody,

Now that we’ve been using the app for a while I do have some ideas and suggestions. I just didn’t want to overwhelm you haha!

Overall we’re still enjoying the app and it is making a difference in our family thanks!

1. There is a bug where even though we’ve selected to use points instead of dollars for the game in game settings, when we do ‘cash out’ kid’s cash it still shows in dollars

2. Sometimes for important jobs we use a combination of expectation and job. So if they do the job they get the points but if they don’t they get a warning. This is a bit flexible -we don’t give a warning every time, only if the expectation is badly missed. Nothing for you to do with this one necessarily, just a tip

3. We would love if parents could sign up for jobs for their kids and mark them completed. I know it’s part of the gameplay for them to do it themselves, but sometimes when they do jobs just before bedtime their devices are not available for them to mark them completed straight away.

4. The fact that jobs waiting for parent review get automatically changed back to posted or whatever at midnight is really annoying. I know that this one might be hard to fix as it could affect the system where jobs are automatically posted each day or on certain days of the week, but this is the most annoying part of the app for us at this stage. I wish jobs waiting for parent review just persisted until they were dealt with by a parent instead of disappearing at midnight.

5. Possibly a way to create jobs for specific kids.

6. A way to easily duplicate a job without having to type everything in again

7. An easy way for parents to ‘compete’ with the kids. I think this is important because it shows the kids that when they don’t take and complete jobs then the jobs are still there and still need to be done. I think I read somewhere that there’s a way to do this by the parents creating a second profile? I haven’t tried that, but it seems too hard as it would require me to log on and off of 2 accounts all the time. I want to be able to sign up for the jobs that I do and get points for them like the kids do. Maybe also a game setting where something triggers when the parents do twice as many points as the kids in a week? Or the same amount of points or whatever. Add parents to the leaderboard too.

8. Points bank: we require our kids to set aside 10 points per week to go towards presents for birthday/party/Christmas/mother’s Day etc. they can then use their remaining points or bank then up for later. I cash these points out each week in the app and tally the incoming and outgoing points in a spreadsheet. But it would be handy if I could do this straight in the hfk app instead.

9. Sometimes it takes a bit long to load pages in the app. It seems to be better since the last update, and doesn’t load forever as often, but it still loads for too long sometimes and sometimes just loads forever.

10. It would be nice if there was a saved history of cash outs, with a way to add a description

11. Persistent records across weeks: we need to be able to see the leaderboard on the day of the team meeting but by then it’s already been reset for the new week. That means I need to sit down Saturday night and take screenshots of the info I need before the new pay period starts. If I forget or am too late the info gets overwritten permanently. It would be nice to have a history of previous leaderboards. The pay stubs don’t give that info.

12. We have trouble with our older kids always being on top of the ladder at the end of the week because they do more chores and/or more valuable chores. This is demotivating for the younger 2. I don’t know what the fix is for this. Maybe an ‘equity’ slider setting for each kid/adult which introduces a handicap for the leaderboard? Sorta like the weighting factor of recognition and warnings?

That all for now thanks. To prioritise from my perspective it would be something like 3, 4, 6, 9, 8, 11,

Thanks for a great concept and a great app!
